I already sent my translation version to Alan privately as he
requested, but with all the responses on the SIG that were not
sent privately, I thought I would add mine here.
"Razem gminy i obszary doworskie powiatu sadowego Kolomyja."
I offer the following translation, "Total communities and
estates in the Judicial District of Kolomyja."
Some people will interpret "gminy" as "municipality", others
will interpret it as "commune". Both are correct dictionary
translations, but I think the best English term is "community".
The German equivalent in gazetteer sources is "Gemeinde" and
the Ukrainian is "Hromada".
Alexander Sharon suggests "communes" for "gminy" and this is
a valid translation that is most famously used for "Gemeinde"
in Switzerland. But the English term "commune" has a specific
connotation in North America that might be misleading to
some. Therefore I prefer the term "community."
Alexander also suggests the term "manorial territories" for
"obszary dworskie" but the term "manorial estate" or simply
"estate" is also commonly used.
I want to applaud the information that Alexander posted here
regarding the separate entities of estates and communities.
Even most experienced researchers do not know the
differences. Alexander, as usual, has brought forward an
important point regarding the jurisdictional organization of
Galicia. Most researchers refer incorrectly to a "town" or
"village" when in fact they are referring to the "estate" or
"community". The terms village and community are not the
same. For example, a single community may actually consist
of more than one village!

from commune, and persons living on manor territory did not
have the right to participate in the self-government of the
commune proper.

from the communities existed only in Galicia and Bukovina
crownlands, but nowhere else in Austro-Hungarian Empire."
